MMDS

MMDS stands for Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service that is also known as wireless cable. It is a popular wireless telecommunication technology and is used for networking, broadband connectivity, and some other general-purpose issues.

MMDS (Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service) is a sort of broadcast services that runs in the UHF (ultra-high-frequency) part of radio spectrum ranging from 2.1 to 2.7 GHz. MMDS is commonly known as a wireless cable. This wireless cable was the substitute of conventional TV cable. It also provides you fax/ telephone, data and audio transmission.

How MMDS Work:

The architecture of wireless cable system is based on two basic nodes receiving sites and transmitting sites. Transmitting sites are the main node called HUB of MMDS system. Programming information is sent to MMDs system from satellites that comes from local station or recorded video types. These signals are then amplified when they are fed into transmitted of discrete type.

The range of power transmitter is 1 to 200 watts per channel or 15 to 100 watts per digital power channel. Individual microwave channels are combined or multiplexed and transfer to a transmitting antenna through wave-guide or coaxial cable. Transmitting antenna located at center radiates MMDs signal to the desired sites in pattern of omni direction (360 degrees).

In the use of MMDS, medium type of power transmitter is located along with an omini directional broadcast antenna near the point of opographical in the coverage area. Workable radius can reach to 70 miles in simple or flat terrain. Each subscriber is provided a small antenna with converter that is placed on the top or next to conventional TV set. For these services, subscriber has to pay monthly fee like satellite TV service for it.

MMDS frequency band has place a for hundreds digital or analog video with narrowband channels that is provided to subscriber to send signals to the network. These narrownband channels were designed for educational setting (wireless classrooms). Educational applications got much entertainment for these services but conventional TV viewers like to select satellite services that present more channels.

Recent deregulation technology allows different TV firms to deliver internet and telephone services with the digital technologyy. In this way, you can make effective use of bandwidth as MMDS contains comprehensive future strength. Network based on MDDS technology can provide telephone, fax, high-speed internet access and TV channels without cable connection.

MMDS operates on licensed frequencies of FCC. In the United States, FFC divided the country into BTA (basic trading area) and auctioned some basic rights to transfer on MMDS bands in these areas for MMDS service providers.

MMDS and DOCSIS:

MMDS has adopted data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) in the cable modem world. Now it has advanced version named as DOCSIS+ for wireless broadband. The security of data transport is accomplised with the use of MMDS between WMTS (wireless modem termination system) and broadband wireless modem that are located in the station network of provider.

DOCSIS+ usually reduces vulnerabilities of theft of service under MMDS when WMTS apply authenticated key-management protocol on client/server architecture and enforce encryption. WMTS manages distribution of key material in the wireless broadband modems.

MMDS and LMDS wireless modems use the key-management protocol of DOCSIS+ to get traffic encryption and authorizing material from WMTS and support key refresh and re authorization issues. The key-management protocol makes use of X.509 digital certificates, Triple DES encryption, and RSA to secure data during key exchange process between WMTS and the wireless. MMDS is used commonly as it provides significant range than LMDS.

Why MMDS System is popular:

MMDS system is getting popularity for many reasons.
When signals are transmitted from location, service site is ready for subscriber installation at the completion of site construction.
It requires only few weeks or month for the construction of MMDS transmit site while conventional cable TV system may complete in three or more years.

Proper designed MMDS system delivers high picture quality, distortion free picture to subscribers.
Another advantage of an MMDS system is the picture quality. A properly designed MMDS system will deliver clear, distortion free pictures to each subscriber’s home. Since the signals do not have to pass through many kilometers of coaxial cable and numerous amplifier chains, the noise associated with typical cable systems is not introduced to MMDS signals. The overall result is a better picture quality and greater subscriber satisfaction.
