Computer Help Guide

Every computer user faces some kind of technical issues and requires help for resolving those issues. In the article, I have listed the most common categories of the computer and suggested some solutions for the common computer problems.  Microsoft Windows, computer hardware, computer networking, computer software and web browsers all generate different kinds of error messages and there is a solution for every error.

 

1. Windows Help

Microsoft’s Windows are not free of vulnerabilities.  The common errors with the Windows based operating systems are related to security, performance, software, registry and hardware conflicts.   The following list provides the solutions for most common problems of the Windows.

a. Performance Issues

 To get the optimized performance from a Windows based operating regularly updated Windows from the update.microsoft.com and install and latest service packs and security patches, uninstall unnecessary program to speed up the Windows, uninstall the programs from startup, and scan Windows registry with the registry cleaner program.

 b. Security Issues

To keep your Windows secure install an up-to-dated antivirus program and antivirus program, implement a firewall, backup your critical data regularly and use strong passwords.

c. Devices Issues

 Sometimes faulty hardware and insecure software applications produce causes conflicts and this leads crash the Windows.  Install up-to-dated device drivers from the vendor’s website, replace the faulty hardware with the new one, never install the unauthorized software applications, update system BIOS and disable the floppy disk.

 

2. MS-DOS Commands

The following list contains the most commonly used commands for troubleshooting and configurations purposes.

It is used to start the MS-DOS help

MD MKDIR

Creates a directory

RMDIR or RD

Deletes a directory

REN

Changes the name of the specified file.

XCOPY

It copies the directories, sub directories and files.

Scandisk

It scans the hard disk for the possible errors and troubleshoot them

VER

It displays the current version number of the MS-DOS

MSD

It provides the technical information about the computer.

CHDIR

It displays the current working directory

Debug

It is used to test and edit the programs.

Defrag

It increased the hard disk’s performance by reorganizing the files and folders on the disk.

Exit

It is used to exit the MS-DOS.

Type

It displays the content of the file.

CHKDSK

It verifies the integrity of the hard disk and displays the current status.

 3. Internet and Spyware Help

Internet is a dangerous place for your computer if no proper security mechanisms have been implemented.  The common known threats from the internet are viruses, hackers, spyware, adware, Trojan horses, identity theft, intruders and browser hijacks.  You need to implement solid security solutions to prevent your privacy and data from these threats.  Spyware is a most common and easy to spread threat to every computer user that is connected to internet.   

Spyware is a software program and once it is installed in any computer it performs a variety of tasks and monitors the user’s activity on the computer.  The most appropriate solution against the spyware is to install anti spyware program.  Today most of the antivirus programs are also packed with the anti spyware and firewall program.  So only antivirus program doesn’t provide guarantee for your computer’s security unless you also install the anti spyware and firewall programs with it.  The most commonly antivirus and anti spyware solutions are provided by the Norton Antivirus, Trend Micro, McAfee and Panda Antivirus.  Updating your operating system regularly and installing the latest service packs and security patches provides an additional layer or security.

 4. Hardware Help

Troubleshooting computer hardware related problems requires skills and complete set of tools.  Every computer hardware device brings some kind of software, configurations and hardware related errors.  Being a hardware technician you need to have a complete set of tools such as software diagnostic disk, disk partitioning tools, cable tester, multimeter and post card.  Also reading the device’s manual and consulting online technical forums provides right approach in troubleshooting the problems.

5. Security Issues

Keeping a computer system secure is amongst the top responsibilities of a system administrator.  Some of the useful security tips include the followings.

  • Use up-to-date anti virus and anti spyware program.
  • Use strong passwords.
  • Don’t leave your computer unattended.
  • Keep your computer in the humid and dust free environment.
  • Backup your critical data regularly.
  • Install a firewall program.
