Turn On and Manage Printer Sharing

A printer is a peripheral computer device that is used to produce the hard copy documents. In the Windows based operating systems it is very easy to configure and manage the printer sharing with the other network users.  There are different types of printers and sharing a printer requires the same techniques and skills.

 

How to Share the Printer

Sharing a printer is very easy. Open control panel and select Printer and Faxes. Right click on your default printer name and click “Sharing”.  In the sharing Tab select “share this printer” and provide the shared name of your printer and click Ok. The same shared printer name will be shared by all the network users.

 

How to Connect with the Shared Network Printer

You network printer can be connected by following two methods.

  • Click start > Run and type \\printservername\sharednameofprinter i.e.\\homeserver\hpofficejet.  By using the above path, you will be promptly connected with your network print server.
  • Click Start > Control Panel > double click Printer and Faxes
  • In the Printer’s Task on the left side click “Add a Printer”. Printer Wizard will be started click next.
 
  1. On the next window, select a Network Printer, a printer attached to another computer.
  2. On the next Windows, you can either browse for the Printer or check this box “connect to this printer … and put this path \\printservername\sharednameofprinter of your network printer.
  3. Next, you will be asked that “Do you want to use this printer as a default printer” click next.
  4. You’r done.  You have successfully connected with your network printer.

Next time, when you want to print something from the MS Office or other applications, you just need to press the print button in the application of use the Control+P in the MS Office applications.

Your request will be forwarded towards the network print server.  You can collect the hard copy of your files.

How to Manage the Printer

After you successfully installed and printer, you can manage it through the variety of ways.

Right click on the printer name and click Properties.  Here you will find five tabs.  General, Sharing, Ports, Advanced and About.  You can configure a lot of options here like printing priority, scheduling,  ports selection, driver installation, page size/settings, orientation and number of other options.
