Error Detection and Correction

Error detection and correction has great importance in Information technology.  This technique is used to protect the data integrity.  It is the ability to detect the errors in the computer hardware or software by using some techniques and tools.

There are several methods that are used to detect the errors.  The most common techniques are checksum, parity, cyclic redundancy check, polarity scheme and has function. In the TCP/IP based networks the error detection is performed at multiple levels.

In the data storage, the error detection and correction is used to check the reliability of the storage media.  CRC or Cyclic Redundancy check is used to identify the errors in the digital data.  Error Detection and Correction is used to correct the data in the transmitted or storage form.

The most commonly used techniques or detecting the garbled and error messages are CRC, Checksum, MNP and CCITT V.42
