Fiber Optic Media System (10BASE-F)

10BASE-F is the name for an IEEE 802.3 standard that is implemented in the Ethernet networks. 10BASE-F supports Ethernet’s 10Mbps data transfer rate. 10BASE-F is based on the IEEE’s 802.3 specifications. 10BASE-F is a media type in the Ethernet that is similar to the 10BASE-T.  Each computer is connected to the fiber optic hub in the star topology. The 10BASE-F is a 62.5 micron diameter fiber optic cable.

10BASE-F is terminated either by SMA or ST connectors.  10BASE-F consists of two strands of multimode cable, in which one strand is used for sending the data and other for receiving the data. The 10BASE-F cable is used in the environments that are electrically noisy such as industrial areas or near the motors, generators or construction work.  The 10BASE-F media can be used to cover the more distance and it provides the much high speed than the other Ethernet media types.

It provides the best upgradable options to support the Fast Ethernet. It can support the distance up to 1.2 miles. The 10BASE-F consists of the following three standards based on their specifications.

  • 10BaseFL
  • 10BaseFB
  • 10BaseFP

In addition to 10BASE-F, the 10Mbps can be implemented by the following different media types.

  • 10BASE-2 (Thinwire coaxial cable.  It supports the maximum segment length of 185 meters.
  • 10BASE-5 (Thicknet coaxial. It supports the maximum cable length of 500 meters.
  • 10BASE-T (It refers to the twisted pair cable.)
  • 10BASE-36 ( It is a broadband multichannel coaxial cable that supports the maximum cable length of 3600 meters.)
