What is Voice Coding

In humans, the speech is produced when the air is travel from the lungs and travels through the vocal track.  Speech coding is the branch of the signal processing and it deals with the data compressions.  The most common Speech or Voice coding applications are voice over IP, cellular phones, communication devices and other voice communication applications.

Speech coding technique is similar to the audio data compression and the audio coding.
Speech is the simpler signal than the audio signal so the speech coding is different than the audio coding.

There are different speech coders that are used to minimize the bit rate to reduce the storage area and maintain the quality of the speech.  These coders provide the digital representations of the audio signals. Speech coding refers to the quality of the speech.

Most of the coders operate at 2Kbps. Speech coders are used to modeling the vocal tracks.  They process the speech in blocks which results in the communication delay.

Depending upon the communication application this delay can be as low as 1msec and in the IP telephony 500msec. remarkable improvements and the progress has been made to produce the high quality and low bit rate at very low cost.
