Introduction to Terminal Services

In the Windows based computers, the terminal services are the utility that allows you to host multiple simultaneous sessions on your computer.  Terminal services allow you to access the different types of the data, applications and the remote services over any time of the computer network.

 

 In the terminal services, the user interface of the application is presented to the client.  Windows provide the two client software Remote Desktop and the Remote Assistance to use the terminal services.  The key features of using the terminal services include the following.

  • Centralized Remote management.
  • Remote installation.
  • Remote troubleshooting.

 

  • Simplified Application deployment and usage.
  • Reusing of the older computer hardware.
  • It allows the sharing of the applications and the computer desktops over LAN/WAN network.
  • Automatic reconnection of a disconnected session.
  • Better management of the network resources.

 

Terminal services have been the part of the Windows based computers.  There are two components of the terminal services i.e. terminal services client and server.  Server component is installed on the Windows Server 2000, 2003 and 2008 computers.

Terminal server handles the authentications of the clients.  It can be used in the cluster and it can handle multiple simultaneous requests.  Remote desktop is the terminal services client application that allows the network users to remotely log in to the server.

How to Setup Windows 2003 as a Server

In the Windows Server 2003, open the “Configure Your Server” and select the Administrative Tools. In the Role Section choose Terminal Server and click next two times. 

Terminal server installation wizard will be started and after it completes, you will be promoted to restart your computer to make your computer to act as a terminal server.  After the computer is restarted you will be present with a new screen that shows that your computer has now become a terminal server.  Click finish to load the Windows.

Through the terminal services manager console, you can configure multiple options like logon settings, sessions, client settings, network adapters, server settings, permissions and multiple other options.

How to use Terminal Services Client
Windows provides two client applications i.e. Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance to connect to the Terminal server.

  • Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Remote Desktop.
  • Select the name of your terminal server.
  • Provide login information and press Connect. After authentication you will be connected to your Terminal server.
