Introduction to Proxy Server

A proxy server is a server that forwards the requests to the other servers.  In computer networking a proxy server is a dedicated computer that accepts the requests from the client computers and relays to the other computer on the internet. It is often associated with the gateway computer, which combines an internal network with the external network.

It also act as a router for the application level protocol exchange and provides the features the network address translation by hiding details of the internal network.  A typical proxy server provides the following features.

 

  • Improved performance for all the users in a network.
  • IP Blocking
  • Filter Requests.
  • Web caching.
  • User management.
  • Monitors inbound/outbound traffic.
  • It also acts as a firewall.
  • Logging.
  • Traffic monitoring.
  • Supports multiple services like HTTP, DHCP, FTP, SMTP, UDP, Telnet, Socks5 and Pop3 etc.
 

There are lot of proxy software and some of the most common are mentioned below.

Wingate

It is an integrated internet gateway and communication server that is used to provide the internet access to the multiple computers in a network.  It will let you manage the internet access for your home, office or enterprise business.  It has built-in NAT, DHCP, full email server, content filtering, antivirus scanning, antivirus, bandwidth control, support for the terminal server and the Active directory, remote gateway monitoring and the DMZ support.

Winproxy
