How to Use Offline Files in Windows XP

Offline Files utility in the Windows based computers let you synchronize your files and folders with your network servers.   You can use the offline files when you are not using your computer network.  You can store these files on your computer and use when you are not connected with your computer network and when you again connected with the network, the changes you made in the files are updated in the same files on the network server. To setup your computer to use the offline network files you need to do the following.

 

  • In Windows XP click Start > My Computer and on the Tools menu select the Folder Option.
  • In the Folder option click the Offline files tab and make sure that you have enabled it.
  • Select Synchronize all offline files before logging off to select the synchronized file
 

Synchronization means that you have the full synchronized and updated version of the files.  With the above settings, your computer is configured to use the offline files.

 

How to make a File or Folder Available Offline

After setting up your computer to use the offline files the next step is to select the network files and folders to be available offline.
Click Start > My Computer > double click the network drive to view of contents of it.
Click the shared network files or folder that you want to make it available offline.
Click “Make Available Offline” on the file menu
To make a Network file or folder unavailable offline you need to click “Make available offline” to make it unavailable.

How to View the Shared Network Files that are available Offline

You can view the shared network files that are available offline by performing the following action.

  • Click Folder Options in the Tools Menu.
  • Click View files on the Offline Files tab.

As mentioned above that the offline network files and folders let you work on them when your network is unavailable. The changes you make in these files are frequently updated when the network is available. The offline files are automatically synchronized.  To make the offline files synchronize manually you need to right click an offline file and click synchronize.
