Introduction to Cisco Routers

Cisco is a renowned company around the word for its certification program and network equipment. It provides various network solutions including VPN system, switches, training programs, and routers.

A router is an effective communication device that connects WAN to LAN and LAN to WAN or WAN with WAN. Every router has special operating system, flash memory, NVRAM and RAM. Many organizations, commercial and home users use router to get corporate connectivity of networks between ISP and internet. Various network vendors like Cisco, Foundry, Junier, Nortel, LinkSys and D-link manufacture different types of routers. However, Cisco is considered the largest network and router manufacturer worldwide.

 

All types of routers work at the network layer of the OSI model. Router maintains record of IP addresses of sending and receiving nodes in a routing table. Cisco routers has got great popularity among people due to different features like high performance, fast eathernet, scalable network, IP security, call manager and VPN support. Different support services like data, wireless, video, security and voice are integrated with these routers.

 

In this article, I would like to give you brief overview of different Cisco routers and their features. Most popular series of Cisco routers are 800, 3600, 1800, 7600, 7200 and 2600.

800 Series

Award wining 800 series cisco router contains various features like security, wireless connectivity and data communication. The important feature of this router includes 10 VPN tunnels, built-in security, fixed platform, high quality server, fast Eathernet, and DSL support. 800 series include 851, 815, 871,876, 878 and 876 routers.

 

1800 Series

Cisco 1800 series router is ideal for small or medium sized organizations.  It provides various cortical business services like security, wireless connectivity, data communication and internet access. 1800 series router includes multiple VPN tunnels, WAN interface options, support for voice ports PBX and PSTN, voice messaging, and multiple interface options. In 1800 series, you will find 1801, 1811, 1802, 1812, 1803, and 1861 routers.

2600 Series

Cisco 2600 series router is an award-wining router with multiple services. It has built-in security, WAN /LAN configuration, Fast Eathernet, serial ports, ring network port and broadband internet access. 2600 series router is considered ideal for large or medium size businesses. 2600 series router include following series of routers like 2612, 2610, 2620, 2611, 2621, 2650 and 2651 routers.

2800 Series

Cisco 2800 series provides services like voice, data, wireless, security around the world. It is manufactured for the purpose of high speed or high quality concurrent services that contain E1/T1 connections. 2800 series routers are used commonly for their reliability, high quality performance and correction of critical problems worldwide. It supports two built in routed ports of 10/100/1000 mbps, 1500 VPN tunnels, supply connector and a moduler platform with interface options. 2800 series include 2801, 2821, 2811 and 2851 routers.

3800 Series

3800 series is an integrated service type of router that is designed for complex networks and critical business applications. It provides integrated services for concurrent T3/E3 wire speed for transmission of voice, video data and wireless signals. It provides reliability, high performance, security, aviailability and security to complex network infrastructure. It includes series of 3825 and 3845 routers.

7200 Series

7200 series routers are widely used for the ISPs and enterprise business worldwide. It includes connectivity options, IP security, award wining services, 5000 VPN tunnels, Data/video/voice integration, packet over sonnet, multi protocol support, bandwidth management flexibility and scalability. It includes 7204, 7201 and 7206 series of routers.

7600 Series

7600 series routers is used for high performance, integrated video call control, session border control, intelligent service gateway, wireless mesh networking, Eathernet switching of high density and IP/MPLS routing. It is beneficial for the organizations and ISPs as it provides business and consumer services over an Eathernet network. 7600 series contain 7603, 7606, 7604, 76013 and 7609 routers.
