Introduction To Modems

A modem is a computer communication device that is used for the modulation and demodulation the computer data signals over the regular telephone lines.  It converts the digital signals into the analog to travel over the telephone line and the analog signals to the digital.  The speed at which a modem transmits the data is measured in the units which are known as bps.  There are different types of the modems such as fax modem, cable modem, DSL modem, wireless modems, optical modems, radio modem and the ADSL modem.  In the telecommunication networks, radio modems transmit the data packets at a very high speed over the microwave radio links.

The other usage of the radio modems are the mobile phones, wi-fi networks and the direct broadband satellite connection. Choosing a modem for your computer requires some technical knowledge.  Regarding the computer, the V.92 is the latest modem standard.  It includes the latest technology and is compatible with the old computer systems.  V.92 comes in two types internal and external.

An internal modem plugs into the PCI slot inside your computer and the external modem goes outside your computer.  There are different categories of the modems such as hardware, software and the controller-less.  A standard modem contains two parts, analog section and the digital section.

DSL Modems

A DSL modem is a communication device that is connected with the DSL phone line and is used to provide the high speed internet connectivity. Most of the DSL modems are external and connected to the Ethernet port of the computer and they vary in speed from 64 kb to several megabits per seconds.  A DSL modem’s hardware consists of power supply, digital data pump, micro controller, filter, analog chip and the power circuitry.

The most popular manufactures are D-Link, 3Com, FujitSu, Huawei, Alcatel, Sagem, Siemens, Intel and U.S.Robotics. DSL modems manage the sharing of internet connection with the several computers in a network.

Fax Modems

Fax modems are internally and externally to the computer and they are used to modulate and demodulate the data signals.  Fax modems come with the communication software to send the faxes and the documents should be in the electronic form.  Fax modems send the documents electronically at the speed of 9,600 bps.  Fax modems require large disk space to receive the documents on your computer.  The major manufacturers of the Fax Modems are Intel, Fujitsu, U.S Robotics, Motorola, Huawei, Alcatel, D-Link and Acer.

Cable Modems

Cable modems are preliminarily used to provide the high speed broadband internet access and they can also be used to provide the VOIP services.  They can offer the speed up to 2mbps.
