Introduction to Filters and Signatures

Attack signatures and filters protect the user’s privacy and data’s integrity from the online security attacks and vulnerabilities.  There are different types of filters that are used to protect your operating system and the applications.   These filters fully monitor the data flow in the network.  The traffic filters are used to detect the changes in the traffic flow between two or more computers in a network.

The traffic filters are useful against the unknown worms, Denial of Service attack, rogue applications and vulnerabilities in the traffic pattern.

The traffic is measured based on the IP address, port number and protocol being used.  These filters are capable of detecting the multiple network attacks at the same time.  The filters are capable of doing a number of actions including the alert messages and emails to the administrators, block the particular port and IP address.  You need to set the filtering techniques at different levels in a network such as email client and server, network server and gateway.

File signatures shows that you have the exact version of any software installed on your computer.  There are many file signature applications that you can run on your PC to check that you have the exact version of the software and your operating system is full patched and secure against the vulnerabilities.

File signature shows the file name, product name, product description, vendor name, software version and other related information.  File signature identification ensure that your system is fully integrated and patched and it manages to minimize the risk exposures from the vulnerabilities. You get the access to the online File Signature Database to verify your that your software are genuine and most recent.

The filters can also be defined the text file with the following common parameters.

type  filter_class_name
name  filter_instance_name
enabled  boolean
users  user_name_list
exclude_users  user_name_list
time  time_spec
include  url_pattern
exclude = url_pattern

You can define the following classes in your filter file.

Animation Filter: It removes lopping from the GIF images.
Blacklisting URLs: It blocks the access to the specified pages.
Comment Signature Filter: It blocks the HTML code.
Web Content Filter: It blocks unwanted contents.
Media Grabber and Filtering : It is used to download and grab the streaming video and audio.
Request Header Filter:  It is used to modify the HTTP request header.
Cookies Filter: It is used to remove the cookies.
Exe File Filter: It blocks the executable (downloadable files).
File Type Filter: It blocks the certain types of the files.
Images Filter: It Removes images by source or by size.
Popups Filter: It is used to filter the popups.

The best way to implement the filtering technology and the files signature techniques is to use an application that supports both the functions. You will be better able to manage your network, control the traffic flow and protect your network from the internal and external threats and security vulnerabilities.
